Unveiling of Sir John Brunner's Memorial Tablet at Ullet Road Church

On Tuesday, 11th April 2023, a momentous occasion took place at Ullet Road Church. With immense gratitude and deep respect, we were honoured to welcome Sir Hugo Brunner, his family, and members of the church to unveil a Memorial Tablet for Sir John Brunner in the Cloisters. This treasured memorial had originally found a home at the old Essex Road Unitarian Chapel, and after the chapel's demolition, was graciously preserved by the Brunner family. Following heartfelt discussions and unanimous agreement, we are delighted that the memorial has found a fitting new home at Ullet Road Church.

Sir John Brunner, alongside Sir Henry Tate Jnr, played an integral role in the founding of the cloisters and the church hall, in honour of their esteemed fathers. Moreover, Sir John Brunner was the patron of the magnificent painting in our library, where his portrait is proudly displayed next to the great Greek philosopher Aristotle and the revered educator and reformer, Pestalozzi.

The church hall and adjoining rooms hold a special place in the heart of our church community, serving as a space for numerous activities, events, fundraisers, and celebrations. Sir John Brunner's invaluable contribution to our church continues to enrich the lives of all who step through the welcoming doors of Ullet Road Church.

To commemorate this special day, Rev. Phil Waldron led Sir Hugo Brunner's family and church members on a tour of the church, culminating in a group photo in front of the memorial. Rev. Phil offered a heartfelt prayer to mark the occasion, which Sir Hugo kindly requested a copy of as a cherished memento.

After the prayer, everyone gathered for a warm cup of tea and biscuits, reflecting on the afternoon's events. Rev. Phil noted that Sir John Brunner's memorial now resides above another memorial, that of Major John Evans. As contemporaries, it is not difficult to imagine that these two figures may have known each other and even shared committee meetings in their time.

We extend our sincerest thanks to the Brunner family for entrusting us with this memorial. This afternoon will forever be etched in our memories, serving as a poignant reminder of Sir John Brunner's legacy and the profound impact he has had on the Ullet Road Church community.
