On Sunday 5th November 2023, Ullet Road Church experienced an extraordinary fusion of cultures and traditions, as it embraced the Mexican Day of the Dead celebration, integrating it seamlessly with its Unitarian values. The church, filled with both familiar faces and newcomers, became a space of poignant remembrance and heartfelt emotion.

During the service, members participated in a touching ritual where some brought photographs, others displayed images from their phones, and many simply lit a candle in memory of their loved ones. This simple yet powerful act allowed everyone to share in a moment of communal remembrance, speaking briefly of their losses, and in doing so, weaving a mosaic of shared human experience and support.

Rev. Phil's reflection was a important reminder of the joy and laughter that those we have loved bring into our lives. He shared a comical tale that not only brought smiles but also highlighted the importance of cherishing the happy moments we shared with those who are no longer with us. As Rev. Phil wisely noted, "In laughter, we find the enduring presence of our loved ones, a joyful echo that transcends the boundaries of life and death."

The altar, or shrine, was a masterpiece of collaborative effort, beautifully put together by Roberto, Lee, Kay, Viki, and Sue. Special thanks were given to each for their contributions, with particular appreciation extended to Roberto, who suggested celebrating the Day of the Dead – a cherished tradition from his native Mexico. The altar was adorned with marigolds, symbolizing the path for the spirits to return, and an array of traditional Mexican foods. In a delightful nod to British culture, a cup of tea and a biscuit were also included, representing the warm, inclusive spirit of the church.

A moment of pure emotional connection was embodied in the service when Caroline's soulful singing, accompanied by Brigitta's exquisite piano playing, filled the sanctuary. Their performance, intertwining music with the deep emotions of remembrance, resonated with the day's spirit. The lyrics, "Place on the table the fragrant mignonettes, bring inside the last red Michaelmas daisies," captured the essence of our collective longing and love. It was as if each note and each word beckoned, "Come close to my heart, so that I can have you again, as once I did in May," leaving the congregation in a reflective embrace of the beauty and transience of life and love.

The service was not just a remembrance of those who have passed but also a celebration of life's rich tapestry and the connections that endure beyond physical presence. It was a beautiful, inspiring event that has now become a part of the church's ongoing tradition.

Day of the Dead Shrine

As photos of the vibrant and meaningful shrine are shared on our website, we invite our community to reflect on this unique experience. The Day of the Dead service at Ullet Road Church was more than just a ceremony; it was a testament to the power of cultural sharing and the universal human experience of love, loss, and remembrance.

In embracing this tradition, Ullet Road Church has once again demonstrated the beauty and strength of unity in diversity, a cornerstone of the Unitarian faith. It was a day that will be fondly remembered and cherished in the hearts of all who attended.
